Australian singer/songwriter, Gordi, also known as Sophie Payten, shares single, “Volcanic”, from her new album, Our Two Skins, which will be released on June 26th on Jagjaguwar. Her single as well as her album gave the writer a platform to identify and express herself in the midst of a mental chaos.
Volcanic was written in 2018, while Gordi was traveling with her parents in Sweden and confronting her identity as Australia had just voted in favor of same sex marriage. Volcanic fizzles with a swirling mania, “it speaks to a rush of anxiety- about what is real and what is not, about the drama of it, about the vortex of it, when it surges you can feel paralysed and out of control at the same time”, says Payten.
The video was directed by Madeleine Purdy and was mostly shot on Payten’s family property around the town of Canowindra.
Gordi started writing Our Two Skins after having a nervous breakdown. She had just finished a “safe” relationship and had entered a new one while coming to terms with a new “truth” in her identity. Payten believed that the remoteness of her small town Canowinda was the perfect location for shooting her music videos as the still town captured the isolation she felt while dealing with her internal state.
