Vanessa Zamora is hitting her stride with smooth guitar riffs, smoother vocals, and psychedelics that will mellow you out no matter the stress. Con su nuevo sencillo “Psilocibina”, la artista tijuanense sigue mostrando la variedad en su talento.
In this interview, Zamora talks about recording a music video while under quarantine, her newest singles including a collaboration with Mexican hip=hop artist Sabino, and a rescheduled show with Kacey Musgraves.
Antonio Villaseñor-Baca: Acaba de salir este sencillo, “Psilocibina”; primero quise preguntarte sobre el video. Porque es que lo grabaste verticalmente? Es por la cuarentena y los límites ahorita de poder salir?
Vanessa Zamora: Si, pues yo vine a Tijuana a dar un concierto. Y ya que estaba acá, se cancelo. Pero yo iba regresar a Ciudad de México. Iba abrir un show de Kacey Musgraves pero todo se canceló. Yo me quede aca en Tijuana. No salí por dos semanas y aun no tenia video porque la iba grabar en Ciudad de México pero dije ni modo. Pues estoy aqui en mi casa, dije tengo mi celular, tengo filtros de Instagram. Y los filtros de Instagram son como de 3-D. Son como literalmente otro mundo en nuestro celular. Puedes poner fondos de paisaje astroteral. Dije esto tiene mucho poder con como la psilocibina te hace salir a esta realidad alterna. Como que me dio mucho sentido, me grabe yo sola en casa con mi celular y ya, asi salio el video. Dije, me voy a divertir cantando y bailando. Estoy muy contenta con los resultados. Esta divertido.
Qué es lo que te hizo querer escribir una canción sobre esto y cuanto duraste en producirla?
La psilocibina ha sido algo muy relevante en mi vida. La psilocibina me ha ayudado estar más en contacto conmigo misma y ha sido ayuda emocional en encontrar a mi misma y en descubrir a mi misma. Esta canción la empecé a producir diciembre del año pasado. Estaba aquí en mi casa y empecé a darle al beat, empecé a darle en guitarra, en bajo, y después de hablar de la psilocibina. Mi mama fue una de las primeras que me dijo que debo de hablar de algo más que me haya pasado y decidí que la psilocibina estaba muy presente en mi vida y que quería compartir mi experiencia a través de esta medicina y no quiero que sea un tabú. Es algo que está ahí y ahorita está cambiando mucho en el conciente de muchos.
Tornaluna salio hace como dos años; el año pasado te la pasaste en gira o con varias fechas. Además de este sencillo, hay planes para música nuevo, o un album?
Pues lo que te puedo decir ahorita es que estoy grabando mucha música. No creo que sea un disco ahorita como tal. Ahorita voy a estar sacando varios sencillos y quizás más en adelante arme un tipo EP. Pero para ahorita voy a estar sacando puros singles. También estoy adaptándome a todo esto y esperamos que todavia se haga la gira pero pueden esperar música nueva.
I also wanted to ask you about the single you put out with Sabino. That’s definitely across over of genre, so what was that process like and how did that single happen?
It was a pretty natural thing that happened. I was at a friend’s house. I was with him because he was like hey come to my house. Lets smoke a joint and make some music or whatever. I went down there and we were just talking. Sabino and I have been friends for like seven years now. We’ve known each other since I used to live in Guadalajara. So we’ve known each other for a long time now. It was like, ‘what if we just make up a song right now?’ We had been wanting to make music for so long. He started making the beat and I started making the melody so it was this super unplanned song. We made that song in like three hours en Cd. Mexico. It was pretty natural and unexpected. And yeah, it’s about two people that didn’t work out and they’re cool with it. I consider myself a very eclectic artist and you’re going to see it throughout my music that I’m doing R&B, I want to do hip-hop, not only pop, as it is, I just want to explore new genres so doing this with Sabino was a cool experience. I told him I wanted to rap in the song he said okay, let’s do it.
I wanted to circle back to your show with Kacey Musgraves. That show has been rescheduled to December 10th. How did that happen? How do you feel about having that show with her?
Well, I’m excited, even to have a show scheduled right now. But yeah that happened very randomly. It was April 2019 I got this email from this agency asking me if I was interested in opening for Kacey Musgraves, one year previous to when the concert was. I actually saw her at Coachella that year and so I knew who she was and at her (set) she had this disco ball behind her and I was like who is this girl like psychedelic but singing country? It’s exciting to be sharing a stage with a great artist like Kacey Musgraves.
También te quise preguntar sobre la foto que tienes en tu bio en tu website. Me dio risa o me llamó la atención por la expresión que tienes. Me podrias decir porque escogiste esa foto y donde es que se tomó?
Esa foto se tomó en enero de este año en Los Ángeles en un show en un venue que se llama The Paramount. No se, como que it was a super special show. I had fun, the energy was so cool and I just think that that picture makes me feel like myself. I’m in the zone in being myself without even caring. I have this face of joy and excitement and it’s euphoric. I really like that picture just because I know in that moment I am at my top happiness and that;s how I feel when I’m playing live.
